It has been known that Maruti Suzuki does not plan to rush into rolling out its first electric vehicle in India. The electric WagonR had been spotted testing several times but Maruti made it clear that it would not launch an electric car unless the EV market was mature in the country. Maruti Suzuki India Chairman RC Bhargava has now stated that the company’s maiden EV will be positioned in the upper segment of the market.
Maruti Suzuki is the country’s largest producer and seller of passenger vehicles and sees a significant contribution to these sales volumes from its more affordable offerings. For instance, Maruti sold 7.88 lakh hatchbacks in the current financial year, holding a 68.4 percent share in the segment. It will be interesting to see a premium electric car in Maruti’s lineup and how it performs in the market.

“In the beginning, they will be in the upper segment of the market. They are not going to come to the lower end of the market initially. We hope to get good customer acceptance for these EVs as these have been carefully designed and made,” Bhargava informed shareholders at the company’s annual general meeting (AGM). The upcoming Maruti electric car will be manufactured at the Suzuki Motor Gujarat plant.
The localisation in the new Maruti EVs will be high owing to the upcoming battery plant. Last week, the foundation stone of the Suzuki Motor Gujarat EV battery manufacturing facility was laid at Hansalpur, Gujarat. The first-ever electric Maruti Suzuki is expected to be introduced by 2025.
